| Climate |
| Southwest Michigan has a distinct four-season
climate that is typical of most of the Midwest, except that
it experiences some lake effect conditions due to the close
proximity of Lake Michigan. Summer precipitation comes in the
form of showers and thunderstorms. Lake Michigan acts as a giant
"heat sink," which helps moderate the temperatures
of the surrounding land, cooling summers and warming winters.
It is also a natural humidifier, and this causes an increase
in the moisture content in the air, creating heavier snowfalls
in the winter. However, seldom are there prolonged periods of
extreme heat combined with humidity in southwestern Michigan.
Average annual snowfall is 36 inches, but varies greatly from
year to year. Michigan is on the fringe of the Midwest tornado
belt, but sees less of this activity than other parts of the
country. |
